One day, while I was in Peru, the work team from Twisp, WA decided to have  a game night for the kids. It was a lot of fun for the kids, and even brought in a couple of visitors – two ladies from a local language school, who came to try out their new Spanish skills.

One of these ladies was really touched by what she saw. She made immediate connections with the girls, and showed great compassion for them as she heard some of their stories. This women, who plainly stated that she did not share our faith, was obviously impressed by the efforts of the Christians at Torre Fuerte, and their willingness to sacrifice for those kids.

As she struggled with her emotions that night, her final statement surprised me. She felt such compassion, she felt such a connection with the kids, she felt that she should be doing something … but it bothered her that she would do nothing.

I am praying for this woman. Strong feelings are not enough. God calls us to action; to do to others as we would have them do to us; to serve the least of mankind, as though we were serving Him directly.

And what about you? Where has God called you to act? Will you, too, struggle with knowing that you won’t actually do anything?

Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?” James 2:15-16
